willempic.jpgIn Session 2 of Artist to Watch, GJD's Ken Volpe continues riffing with Willem Hartong the guitarist, singer and songwriter of the trio Breaking Laces based in Brooklyn, NY. Breaking Laces has been together for three years and is enjoying success from the constant touring, recording and the simple application of proverbial "elbow grease." This month Breaking Laces won the Starbuck's Music Makers Competition after being selected from over 4,000 bands. The band will embark on another UK tour come January of 2008 with a new album and nationwide tour to follow.

Ken and Willem discuss his influences on the guitar and the artists he admires most. Next, the conversation turns to the band and how they formed and how they've made their way through the maze of the music industry. Willem goes on to discuss Breaking Laces European tour and how the music scene is so much different there than it is in the US.

Ladd tells the stories of how he spent his time at the music store from the age of two and was surrounded by some of the best players in the world who would come in for instruments. Needless to say, country music was a part of Ladd's DNA and he was schooled by the best the business. Next, Ladd moves into a conversation about the Guitar Hero competition and discusses the experience as he went on to become the ultimate winner for the 2007 contest.

In the interview, Ken and Willem riff on how he found the guitar and his quick rise with the instrument. They move on to discuss the acoustic guitars that Willem uses for songwriting and live on stage. You'll hear about his unique approach to the acoustic guitar and the pedals and rig he uses to get his live sound. Lastly, Willem talks about his practice habits and what he does to keep his chops up and find new ideas when he's out on the road.
