The last couple weeks I've been getting everything ready for my upcoming tour that starts in a week. Since we're now getting down to the wire I'd thought I'd share with all of you my adventures that I've had in the last couple weeks getting everything together.

My adventures began when we found out our drummer wouldn't be able to make the tour because of his scheduling conflicts. Well, that meant that we had to hold auditions for a replacement - and let me just say that water torture is much more fun.

Whammy Bar: Lindsey Buckingham PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:45
ImageAs the individual primarily responsible for Fleetwood Mac's transformation from blues belters into lite-FM mainstays, Lindsey Buckingham has committed more than his share of musical crimes against humanity. He will be judged, in this life or the next, as an unindicted conspirator on every Stevie Nicks composition after "Sara." He will be roundly mocked for the echo-y "tell me tell me lies" refrain on the smarm-rock classic "Little Lies." He will be relieved of the right to vote for idly sitting back as "Don't Stop" - an otherwise harmless ditty - devolved into a rosy-cheeked political rallying cry.

These are products that I originally thought were candidates for the "What Were They Thinking" category, but later felt there might actually be a market for it.

Like my pal/personal guitar Yoda Nick Friese, I couldn’t pull myself away from the couch during Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show. Unlike Nick, however, my attentiveness had nothing to do with Prince’s Telecaster pyrotechnics. Rather, I’d consumed so much bean dip during the pregame show and first half that I found myself chemically fused to the cushions.

About a year ago, a writer from a guitar magazine that had reviewed a couple of our releases contacted me about releasing an album from one of his favorite guitarists, John Blakeley. I’d never heard the name before, so I told the guy to send me a copy, which he did. I was mesmerized! The tones, the style, the class, the production, it sent me places, and I knew we had one of those rare albums that gives you visions and sends you somewhere else when you listen. The album is called Tan Mantis, and was released last Oct. by our label.
GT: Winter NAMM Awards - Best Innovations on an Existing Product or Design PDF Print E-mail

ImageToday’s award category is “Best Innovations on an Existing Product or Design”. This is a tough category because it means taking a stagnated product or design and taking it to the next generation, by making a dramatic improvement.

Keith Richards is one of the coolest individuals ever to walk the face of the earth. He is a pioneer in the simultaneous self-accessorizing of headbands, beads and rubber bands in one’s coif. He is inimitable, incorrigible and, based on his ability to ingest copious quantities of substances of dubious legality, 600 times more likely to survive a nuclear holocaust than a cockroach.

This is the third article in my NAMM awards series. We’ve already covered my favorite guitars and products in a guitar supporting role. Today, I’m going to cover a category called “Products Most Likely to Dramatically Affect the Guitar Industry.”

When you think about it, the guitar industry is not one of revolutionary change. Since the inception of the electric guitar, things have pretty much stayed the same. Had I written this article years ago, I would have covered things like guitar synthesizers, amp modeling, the invention of the delay, wah, chorus, etc. as innovative advances that may have a dramatic effect on our industry. I really didn’t expect much in this domain at NAMM, but I was surprised by a couple of products that provoked these kinds of thoughts.
