My Telecaster-toting buddy, Frank, made me an offer I could not refuse.

The offer consisted of a free ticket to see one of the best, and most original, slide guitar players on the planet, Sonny Landreth, and a free ride down to the show. It would be a two-hour drive from Connecticut to the Boulton Center in Bay Shore, NY, on the eastern edge of Long Island, but I knew it would be worth it.

When we celebrate double-reverse-super-awesome guitar players in this space, we tend to focus on a single guy and his body of work. This is all fine and good when the discussion turns to Richard Thompson or Jimmy Page, whose virtuosity can sustain a 700-word column. But most of the players out there? They inspire the occasional pumped fist and “you might like this, maybe, if you’re in the mood – MP3 attached” email, but little enthusiasm for a full-bore career/catalog appreciation.

Well after signing my new record deal the real work begins. I’ve been going non-stop everyday since the deal went down between meetings with Mike from the record company and tons of phone calls back and forth to everyone involved.

Image In the last issue, I discussed some of my favorite guitars at Winter NAMM. Today, I’m going to talk about some of the interesting guitar supporting products that I saw at the show. A product in a supporting role can be anything from effects, to picks, to pickups, as long as it is meant to make a guitar, or guitarist, sound better or play better. Here are my picks, in no particular order.

A few days after (surviving) Winter NAMM, I was booked to play at Shred Fest at the San Diego Sports Club in San Diego, Ca. Even though I was pretty toasted from NAMM I accepted the gig. My assistant Karen graciously offered to go with me to the show so I wouldn’t have to drive alone.

Digital music distribution is so new that nobody knows where it’s going. Steve Jobs doesn’t know, the former copyright bandit turned legit, Napster, doesn’t know, and Real/Rhapsody’s profit-impaired subscription streaming service seems to offer even less insight.
Whammy Bar: Van Halen vs. The Police PDF Print E-mail

Editor’s note: Sir Whammy penned his column prior to the news last week that the 2007 Van Halen Tour was cancelled due to discord in the band. Guitar Jam Daily regrets that the column wasn’t posted prior to the announcement. However, we feel that it remains a great work by Mr. Dobrow. Although it may tease your imagination as to what “could have been” for Van Halen, it offers a prophetic vision of “what could be” for the Police.

We hope the grin stays on your face long after reading the column. Ours remains.

It is well documented that the founding members of both The Police and Van Halen do not particularly care for one another. Neither has functioned as an actual band for around 23 years, thus putting into doubt whether any musical chemistry remains. And by all accounts, both groups are hitting the road once anew for a single reason: an ocean of dollars so vast and deep that each participant can procure anything from pimped-out electro-lutes (Sting) to his two front teeth (Eddie Van Halen).

Industry Insider: What Does it Mean to Be A Pro? PDF Print E-mail

I think for most people, the first thing that comes to mind when they hear the words “professional musician” is money, and for most, that equates with success, but in my line of work, I know a lot of professional musicians who make little or no money after the expense of being a pro is weighed against the bottom line. The cost of gear, travel, and basic living expenses make it nearly impossible for most to ever profit in this biz, much less base their futures on it, but this never stops them.

Like my pal/personal guitar Yoda Nick Friese, I couldn’t pull myself away from the couch during Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show. Unlike Nick, however, my attentiveness had nothing to do with Prince’s Telecaster pyrotechnics. Rather, I’d consumed so much bean dip during the pregame show and first half that I found myself chemically fused to the cushions.

Question: If you were blindfolded and placed in front of a bar, how would you know that you were at NAMM???

Answer: It would be 10am and the bar would be featuring Sammy Hagar’s own Cabo Wabo tequila!

As Nick and Ken did a great job of describing the conference itself, I wanted to pass on some of the cool and not-so-cool items that I saw at the show. Since it’s Oscar season, let’s run our own award show. Here are the award categories:
