Les Paul, a weekly fixture at New York's Iridium for as long as I can remember has reached the big Nine Three. I'll be going to the Monday night gig at the club, which is being billed as his birthday celebration. I fully expect to see luminaries too numerous to mention show up for the 10pm show. I will dutifully cover the gig for GJD.

Meanwhile, there are tributes afoot in his home state. In The Marshall & Ilsley bank in Milwaukee, title sponsor of the city's Classic Rock Stage summer rock festival, is lighting up its headquarters with Les Paul guitar shaped images, and doing a national promo inviting musicians to upload video tributes.

Les Paul fans can either upload their video tribute online or attend one of four videotaping sessions in Milwaukee for a virtual birthday card. Which I guess will be virtually delivered because he probably hasn't been back there in while. Other Wisconsinite musicians like Daryl Stuermer, have reportedly signed on to do tributes. Also in Milwaukee, an exhibit called "Les Paul's House of Sound" on Saturday, June 21, at Discovery World. Be there or be elsewhere. This year is also Harley-Davidson's birthday, so you could conceivably hit two birds with one stone. I wonder if the motorcycle maker is planning a Les Paul version Harley?
