Gear Review: ZOOM G1J - John 5 Signature Pedal PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 February 2009 15:06

By Laura Valk  - GJD Contributor

The G1J is based on Zoom’s immensely popular G1 effects pedal and features 32-bit processing and 96 kHz sampling with a built-in drum machine. Designed with sounds to inspire and plenty of room for your own creativity, this new signature pedal combines the style and feel of a rock prodigy with the effects expertise of Zoom.  Guitarist John 5 has compiled one of the most impressive resumes in rock. One of the earlier highlights of John 5’s career was the gig with Marilyn Mason.  In addition to his own solo work, his commanding riffs combined with his composition skills have most recently earned him a coveted spot playing with rock icon Rob Zombie.

When I first unpacked the Zoom G1J John 5 Signature Pedal I’d say it took me about a few seconds to plug in and start getting some sounds going.  You’ve gotta love that… But after I really dug into this pedal, I hit a bit of a wall.  It took me a little while to dissect the instruction manual and get a better grasp.  Don’t get me wrong, the pedal is jam-packed with interesting features, it’s just that one tiny LED screen and two tiny knobs might not be enough to act as controllers for all of the options.  I already found myself a bit frustrated with the pedal’s refusal to be 100% user-friendly.
Gear Review: V-Picks PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 February 2009 15:45
By Ken Volpe - GJD
One of the biggest struggles for a guitarist is their relationship with their pick.  But on the contrary, that reminds me of a joke.  There is a girl for every guy but a guitarist has his pick. (If you don’t get that joke, you’re probably not a very good guitarist.  LOL.  So much for my attempt at humor.)

This constant pick wrangling is about learning how to use a pick effectively, how to hold the pick, what type of pick to use, and so on…  For some players this potential conflict continues throughout their playing career. So allow me to introduce the V-Pick and to discuss some of the challenges of picking in general.

Guitar Insider: Getting with John Suhr PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 13 February 2009 15:45
GJD: A lot of people have the opinion that lower output Humbuckers are most “toneful.”  For example, someone like Mike Landau, who is known for having great tone, doesn’t use high output pickups.  So, what are you thoughts about this?

JS: With a lower output pickup you can get more dynamic frequency response.  You get more low end and more top end.  The more you over-wind a pickup the more you start accentuating certain midrange frequencies and your tone becomes darker.  Bear in mind that this is only true if we are talking about all other variables maintaining the same relationship.

GJD: Can you be a little bit more specific?

Gear Review : Zoom H4 Recorder PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 February 2009 03:12
By Ken Volpe - GJD
The Zoom H4 Recorder is a versatile little recorder.  It’s jammed packed with many features such as on-board effects, built-in condenser mics, phantom-powered external mic inputs.  Amazingly enough you are able to use it as a 4-track recorder and record these tracks in a 24 bit/96khz format.

I was able to utilize the H4 in a variety of applications.  First, I used the internal mics to record my band’s rehearsal.  The recording quality was very realistic and I was easily able to save the performance to an MP3 for all of the band members to review the songs we had composed and performed.

Next, we recorded some live interviews that aired on GuitarJamDaily with great results.  Since this was on the fly, the internal mics were once again the logical choice.  FYI: they were the 3 interviews that our own Scotty X did with Brad Whitford, Eric Gales, and Doyle Bramhall II.  So go check it out for yourself and hear the excellent results.
