Pro Shop: Phil’s Production Techniques, Part II PDF Print E-mail

Little did I know that when I started on the guitar in 1961, I’d be here in 2009 writing to fellow guitarists on about my experiences in recording and production of music.  I have been fortunate enough to be directly and indirectly involved with dozens of recordings over these past decades.

One of my most recent endeavors involved me doing some guitar work for a friend of mine in Kansas City.  My signal path was as follows: I recorded my electric through a Line 6 Pod to a Line 6 DL4 rack mounted delay. I then ran stereo out of the DL4 to a Berring analog to digital converter. The final destination was to a stereo input into Pro Tools.  Doing this enables me to dial in a sound or delay on the fly, making adjustments as I select phrases to play. I also may change the various reverb, modulation and delay settings as I go.  Once a phrase is recorded, I may also tweak the wave file in Pro Tools using an Audio Suite Plug-in.

This is the first installment of actual production details, second in the series. This first tune is likely the only instrumental on the album, it’s a rock/fusion number called Thrust, with lots of changes in tempo and feel throughout.

The first session was on 10/16/08, and would include the trio only, with Eric, Brian and myself.

The song starts with a short intro with drums and bass that sets the mood. Tony (producer), being an incredible drummer himself, did a great job of capturing Eric’s drum sound. One of the things I love about Tony is that he spends more time than a lot of producers on drum tone, something that’s very important in this style of music. The drums can make or break an album like this, and Eric is a great player, who’s very creative, but it has to be captured to tape, and Tony knows how to do that. Eric, Brian and I played live with no click in the first session, the goal being to get solid drum tracks, and bass tracks if they're keepers. Brian is very picky, so we really didn’t expect to keep his bass tracks from the first night, just the drums. Tony has a 20’x20’ main room with 2 smaller rooms to the side that make it easy to set up guitar gear in one (though we used the hallway for my tracks) and bass gear in the other, or the bathroom, which also sounds great for bass, then we all played in the big room with headphones.

At GJD, we love bringing you information about things you probably haven’t heard about yet.   This year, there were some folks at NAMM who had prototypes of ideas and were looking for strategic partners to help bring their dreams to reality.  Two of those inventions really caught our attention as ideas that have a real chance of “making it”.

Glasstones – Inventor/entrepreneur Mark Payung was playing slide guitar one day and began thinking about the pure sound his glass slide made on the strings.  If that sounds great, what would it sound like if the strings were attached to glass?  These kinds of questions are how innovation happens.

So Mark went out and got himself a patent on making a guitar sound platform (nut, bridge, fretboard, and frets) made out of glass.  The result is a very unique tone with a clarity and sustain I have not heard before.  While the “feel” of glass under your fingers is different than wood, it has such a distinct sound that I believe there will be a considerable number of players who would use this instrument as a utility guitar, if not a main axe.

We’re going to do a more in-depth interview with Mark and take a closer look at his technology in an upcoming article, but it is definitely worth tracking.

Shred-O-Meter – Quite frequently at NAMM, they have “World’s Fastest Drummer” competitions where they have devices that measure the speed of a drummer as the sticks make contact with the drummer.  I’ve watched them several times and always thought it would be cool if they could do that with guitars.  Tobias Hurwitz asked himself a similar question, and then did something about it.  Tobias created a device called the Shred-O-Meter that actually monitors the speed of notes being played on a guitar.  It’s really quite amazing and has tons of potential for everything from a highly technical practice tool to the beginning of an interface for a REAL guitar game. 

The picture below shows Tobias and his partner Jay with a prototype of the Shred-O-Meter that they were showing off at NAMM.  Many of the big pedal manufacturers were drooling over its potential, so I’m very confident that we’ll one day see Tobias’ invention come to fruition.

In chapter 3 of the 2009 NAMM awards, we look at some of the better guitar accessories that we found.  Naturally, there were thousands of such things to look at, but these are three items that struck us as particularly innovative and “cool”.

Grab Axe
– 30 years ago, I had one of the very first Dean “Z” models (explorer body style).  One day at a gig, some bone-head ran across the stage, tripped over my cord, and pulled the guitar off its stand and cracked the headstock in half.  I’ve since learned that this is not at all an uncommon occurrence, especially with people who lean their guitars up against their amplifiers.  Mick Lindens Gig Gear has responded with a very simple and innovative device called the Grab Axe.  This simple strap secures the guitar in vertical position using a strap that attaches to your amp’s handle.  It works great, is super simple, and is a heck of a lot easier to carry around than a guitar stand.

In yesterday’s article, we talked about some of the best new guitar offerings that we saw at the NAMM show last weekend.  Today, we’re going to highlight a few new amps.

First up is the new series of high-end amps from Paul Reed Smith.  Paul has clearly been busy this year, launching not only the new acoustic guitars that we highlighted last week, but a new guitar amp series that will certainly get a lot of attention.

Fender Roadworn – Over the past few years, Fender Custom Shop has been a driving force behind creating a whole new market of relic and distressed instruments.  Fender has now brought the relic mojo to the mainstream market with its new Roadworn series.  This new guitar line has great vibe with its distressed look, but I also REALLY liked the feel of the relic’d necks.  As a fan of naked (unfinished or lightly finished) necks, the Fender Roadworn axes felt super smooth in my hands – better than any non-Custom-Shop Fender I’ve ever played.  There are five models in the new Roadworn line:

1.    ‘50s Strat
2.    ’60s Strat
3.    ‘50s Tele
4.    ‘50s P Bass
5.    ‘60s J Bass

Each model is built to the specs of its namesake era.  The guitars feature a nitrocellulose-lacquer finish to duplicate the finish of the age.  The six-string models feature supercharged Tex-Mex pickups, and 6105 frets.

Gigliotti Guitars

Long time GJD readers may remember that we reviewed the Gigliotti Joe Bonamassa model, in detail, after its initial launch.  Based on his success with Bonamassa, Patrick Gigliotti has launched an eye-popping line of guitars that got a lot of attention at NAMM.  The Gigliotti line is essentially a build-to-order guitar line that comes in two basic models: the GT and the GS (tele-style and strat-style, respectively) with a whole host of options (neck size, frets, pickups, paint, etc.).  All of the guitars come with the revolutionary Gigliotti Voicing System, which is available in either brass or aluminum.  The guitars are nothing short of amazing in every aspect and they were a real standout in a hall full of thousands of instruments. 

XOX Piezo Model

XOX has now established itself as the leader in carbon fiber electric guitars.  They were one of my picks last year with the introduction of their “Handle” guitar, and this year they expanded their line with three new models.  They collaborated with Billy Sheehan on a baritone model called the “Billytone” and they worked with Earl Slick on a signature Earl Slick model, both of which are fabulous guitars.  But what really blew me away was their new “AcousticXOX”.  I was doubtful when I first saw it because I just couldn’t imagine a piezo in a carbon fiber guitar that is, to say the least, thin on body material.  The guitar features a DiMarzio Hot Minibucker and a Tone Pros piezo bridge with the Ghost system preamp.  The pickups can be blended for a wonderful hybrid tone and there is a mid-boost switch for the piezo that sounds absolutely fantastic.  The piezo doesn’t create a pure, warm acoustic sound like a high-end acoustic would, but it does create a great aggressive acoustic sound that is perfect for blues, rock, and pop players and by combining it with the mini-humbucker, using the blender knob, you can get some very unique and complex tones.  It has replaced the Parker Fly now as my favorite piezo-equipped guitar.  I instantly pulled the trigger on an order for one of these, as well as for a Billytone model.  They are special instruments.

Brazen 7-String Thorsen

The 7-string market has been pretty stagnant and limited to a small number of models made by a relatively few manufacturers.  Because they require a lot of additional engineering, there just aren’t too many builders who want to tackle the job.  But this year, Brazen has decided to take a swing at that market with a VERY credible offering.  Brazen teamed up with Italian shredder Olaf Thorsen and they worked together for a year to create the new Brazen Thorsen model.  This 7-string hot rod features a mahogany body, maple neck with ebony fingerboard, Floyd Rose tremolo, Seymour Duncan pickups (Distortion – bridge/Jazz – neck), and Grover tuners.

The guitar screams, and it plays great.  I watched a variety of people come through the Brazen booth to try out the new 7-string addition and everyone I saw walked away saying that it was a fantastic guitar.

The 2009 Winter NAMM show is over.  It was another great event and, considering the state of the economy, it was a very upbeat atmosphere.  It was clear that manufacturers are concerned about ’09, but that didn’t stop many manufacturers from developing some impressive new toys for us gear junkies.  As always, Guitar Jam Daily took a close look at this year’s new offerings to try to identify those products that represent the best new products for the year.  This year, there are four award categories:

1.  Best New Guitars – Clearly the show covers a lot more than guitars, but we’re focusing on what I thought were some of the best instruments of the show.

2.  Best New Amps  – It seemed like there were many more new amps than usual this year.  These are our picks.

3.  Best New Accessories – These are accessories that we thought were particularly cool or useful.

4.  Futures  – This year, we found a couple of folks who have some innovative prototypes, looking for partners to take them to the next level.

In today’s article, I’m going to name some of the best guitars that I saw at the show.  As always, this is the hardest category to select.  There were some fantastic guitars at the show from all of the major manufacturers, as well as a large number of boutiques.  These picks are by no means an exhaustive list of the guitars that I liked, because there were dozens.  These picks are some of the new instruments that I found which were a) particularly well-designed or constructed, b) brought great value for the price point, or c) did a great job of addressing a particular segment of the guitar market.

Earlier in Part 1, I mentioned that I was going to talk about the current retro craze that has been sweeping the industry for the last few years.  So, let me get into that.  You have all these companies making guitars with blemishes so they will look “old school.”  You have Amp and Pedal companies trying to create the tones of days gone by.  You have Pro Audio companies producing hardware and software to simulate analog tape saturation.  The list goes on and on…. Yes, I know that a lot of these products have been around awhile but it is increasing with each passing year.  That is another great thing about attending NAMM; you can really take the pulse of the industry.

Part of me thinks that the newer technology should be good enough in it’s own realm; but it’s never been the case.  Our ears tell the truth.  If this truth did not exist then this whole retro age would not exist.  Have you ever asked yourselves why are we going backwards?  And more importantly why are we not paying enough attention to the struggling music industry itself?

Every year the Winter NAMM show seems to come around quicker than the year before.  I guess my perception is that as I get older, time goes by quicker.  Wouldn’t you agree?  As I write this, I am on a plane flying back to New York City where the temperature is 8 degrees above zero and I am reflecting back on the 2009 NAMM show that took place in Anaheim, California.

The one theme that keeps running through my mind is how manufacturers keep going deeper in their development of retro products.  Before I get into my thoughts about this retro craze (details in Part 2), I’d like to tell you about some of the happenings from the show. 

I arrived late Thursday afternoon in sunny Anaheim.  Hunger pangs from lack of food on the airplane (although who misses airplane food) kept me from really settling in my room.  Just as well since I was meeting a friend for dinner in downtown Disneyland.
