FX Pedalboard Tips and Tricks PDF Print E-mail

By Benjamin Fargen - GJD Contributor
Back in the 1960’s through the early 70’s guitar players were lucky to have one maybe two pedals on the floor at a gig unless they were a superstar…maybe a Fuzz pedal or the lowly MXR micro boost would make an appearance…other than that it was the guitar, the cord and the amp…

Well things have certainly changed in the modern age…whether you’re catching a show at Wembley arena or a gig at your local hole in the wall blues bar, you won’t ever look at the floor in front of the guitar player and see blank space. You will most likely see a glowing array of LED’s piercing the darkness…what you’re seeing is not a UFO…it is in fact an FX pedalboard loaded to the gills with the latest and greatest pedals…pedals that are gracing the guitar players pedal board… this week. But you know and I know, that pedalboard won’t look the same next week…we just can’t leave it alone! That being said I have built quite a few pedal boards in my day and made many discoveries and many mistakes…here are some tips to help you set up a lean and mean guitar FX pedalboard for your needs.
Live Review: JIMI HENDRIX BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH - Live at BB Kings Blues Club, NYC – 11/28/08 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 December 2008 03:45
By Ken Volpe, GJD
This past Friday I was fortunate enough to witness Frank Marino and his band, Mahogany Rush, at a one-time only Hendrix Tribute Show.  I knew that I needed to be at this show and that it was going to be something special.

I arrived after the warm-up bands’ performances, just in time to see Frank and his band take the stage in a low-key, unassuming way.  Frank started out by telling the audience a bit about himself and why he felt compelled to do this single tribute show.  For anyone who knows Frank, it is no secret that he is not a man of few words.  But believe me after getting to know him a bit, I can say that there are no wasted words, and Mr. Marino draws from a deep pool of knowledge and wisdom.

Frank talked about the huge influence that Jimi had on his early life.  Actually, he said that the first time that he went to see Hendrix in the late 1960’s, he walked out in the middle of the show because he wasn’t diggin’ what he was hearing.  Soon after, Frank heard one of Jimi’s recordings and came to the realization that Hendrix and his music were beyond special.
Industry Insider: Album Production Series Part 1 - Project Summary PDF Print E-mail

By John McGlasson - GJD
For over two years I’ve been writing bi-weekly columns for GuitarJamDaily, and I can’t describe what a pleasure it’s been. Owning a record label has put me in a unique position to pass on info to guitarists they may not normally get, and I’ve loved doing it, but now that I’ve got the label in a holding pattern to allow the industry suits to figure out what to do and enjoy some much-needed profit taking, I’ve stopped signing bands, and have gone back to what I love most; writing, recording, and performing my own music, so my mission for GJD is changing as well.

Over the next few months, I’ll be documenting, in words, pics, video, and audio, the entire production and promotion of my album, the debut for my band, Sons of Science. I’ve assembled an amazing band, I’ve refined the material over several years, and with producer Tony sanFilippo, we expect to make a very unique, high-quality album that’ll appeal to the progressive-rock fans I’ve been able to reach through the release of several vonFrickle albums.
Ernie Ball Partners up with John Mayer on Band Competition PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 December 2008 03:14
COACHELLA, Calif. - In March of 2009 the Ernie Ball Company will take their niche for finding unsigned talent and jump on board one of the most anticipated cruises to set sail since The Mayflower. Mayercraft Carrier 2, hosted by Grammy Award winning artist John Mayer and produced by Atlanta-based Sixthman, will take passengers on a 5-day/4-night adventure cruise from Los Angeles, CA to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Along the way guests will enjoy non-stop live music and theme nights that are all sure to live up to John Mayer's everlasting quest for a good time.

This year's Mayercraft Carrier has an added dose of excitement as Ernie Ball will once again play host to a world-renowned Battle Of The Bands competition. Unsigned bands as well as singer-songwriters from across the globe will have the opportunity to upload their best mp3s by logging onto and see if they have what it takes to join the likes of John Mayer, O.A.R., Guster and others on stage at one of 2009s most sought after musical events. Ernie Ball has engaged FameCast to power the submission site for "Play Mayercraft," using FameCast's proprietary contest management platform to collect and present each band's songs and rank them using a variety of metrics such as online fan voting and community engagement.
CD Review: Judas Priest – Nostradamus PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 November 2008 00:17
By Tyler Bothe – GJD Contributor
Judas Priest's latest release “Nostradamus”, their second with returning vocalist Rob Halford, has caused quite a stir with purists and metal junkies alike.  Some praise its adventurous nature, writing a concept album about the 16th century "prophet" and incorporating enough strings to make Metallicas’ S&M sound like a couple of old fiddler's diddling around.  Others curse it out due to the fact that its more likely to be confused for a new 'Spinal Tap' record then the great metal band of the eighties that created its unforgettable classics.

There's no doubt what Priest was going after here: after you've performed and written songs over four decades its time for a change, and “Go big or Go home” is never a bad mantra for metal gods to follow.  Orchestral harmonies, church organs, outrageous guitar synths; I didn't think I’ve heard anyone croonin' away on a Sitar but it wouldn't be surprising here.  What it amounts to more often then not is an album that flourished in the pomp and frills of studio recording instead of the bitter rawness that live heavy metal produces, and for the record, those pomp and frills are mixed and mastered quite well.

Industry Insider: Who’s Making Your Money Part IV PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 November 2008 00:23
By John McGlasson - GJD
In part four of this four-part series, we’ll look at album/artist/tour promotion.

I’ve wasted more money in this area than any other, by a long-shot. With the old-world music business died the old-world way of doing things, but there are many traps you can fall into believing that if you don’t follow the old path you can’t make things happen. I’ve met some really smart people in this business who’ve had a lot of success in the past, but how much of their advice applies to the modern music biz? I’ve found not much.

The Circle of Events that used to sell music reliably is now completely broken. The music press has little power to sell music, the record stores are gone, full-album sales are in the toilet, and it’d take a lot of single-track sales to make up for it. Show attendance is down across the board, and show CD sales with it. From the outside, most analysts would declare the music business dead. How long does an industry lose money overall before it’s official?
Amp Insider: Getting Amped with Brandon Montgomery PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 November 2008 04:25
GJD: So, let’s go back and talk a little bit more about transformers.  How do you pick your transformers?

BM: Well, it really helps if you have a good transformer manufacturing company to work with.

GJD: What do you mean by that?

BM: A company that has good communication skills to really be interested in finding out what I want for my amps.  Also, that they be willing to build you different prototypes to test the amps until you find the right one.  Another big thing is consistency and reliability on their end.

GJD: I assume that you order various transformers in bunches?
